A few months ago we started reading simple chapter books at bed time (I went to my local library and had the librarian recommend a few to me, most are on a 3rd-4th grade reading level but my 5 year old easily understands the story) We started with a book called "Aliens for Breakfast" (The author escapes me right now) but it was a cute story about a boy who found an alien in his cereal bowl, the boy then had to help save the world from a bad alien who was in the boys class at school. My daughter really enjoyed the story and we would read a chapter a night before bed. Then I would ask her questions about what happened (what was your favorite part today? Did you think that was silly or scary? What would you do if you were in that situation? etc...) and she really enjoyed interacting and she would even act out a few scenes with me or using stuffed animals. When we read chapter books that don't have many pictures we like to create what we think it looks like. so for example, we are reading "Bridge to Terabithia" right now, so we used a small poster board, some leaves and twigs from outside along with some consturction paper and popsicle sticks and we made a picture of what we thought there little fort in teribithia looked like. We have even been on out own little adventures there. She really enjoys doing crafts so making something to dipict a pictureless story is something she really enjoys. Also, for simpler books I will substitue the characters names with my children's name and then the kids can act out the story or just listen as they go on an adventure or learn something!Stephlee1227https://www.blogger.com/profile/08897727589045088803noreply@blogger.com
