My essay is up!

A few posts ago I mentioned that the latest issue of Segullah came out and it had an essay of mine. Well, the link is finally up! Click here to read it. The editor even said it should be required reading for every Relief Society. What a compliment! Love those ladies at Segullah :)

I just read the article and I would like to echo the sentiments of the editor and say yes it should be read in every RS but I would like to add that it should be read by every Bishop as well. I think too many of them have that "Pray and it will be okay" type of attitude because they just don't get it. This article can help them to start to understand. Well done.

Wow! All I can say is wow! Besides being an incredibly talented writer, the story was absolutely compelling. I agree with your editor. It should be required reading not only for every Relief Society but also for every priesthood leader. Thank you so much for sharing and congratulations on the publication. Great stuff!

Oh, I see "the miz" expressed the same thought. Well, I stick by my comment. It should be read by priesthood leaders who need to understand this experience that is probably much more common in our own wards that any of us realize.

Fabulously done, Laura! I read this before, when you were editing it, and yet reading it today I remembered all over again what a powerful writer you are and what an important message you have to share. I love that you don't try to answer the question, "I was pretty sure I was doing everything right. Being righteous was supposed to make a person happy. So why wasn't I?" and the implicit corollary of "If I'm not happy then that must mean I'm not righteous" but at the same time don't let it affect your faith either. You are talented and interesting and beautiful and witty and I am so glad you are in my life!

Thanks for your support guys! I read it over last night and, um, I had forgotten how much I'd said. I shocked myself . . .so I guess I'm glad you all find it beneficial. I hope it helps other people who are in the same situation or a similar one. Feel free to pass it on :)

Well done. I think, as brothers and sisters, we would be amazed at how many of those around us are struggling.

Oh Laura! I don't even know what to say. This is an amazing piece of writing. You are a talented writer, your story is moving, and your message needs to be heard! It brought me to tears both times I read it. Beautiful!

I'm proud of you for having the courage to share your story, and to be open about your experience. I have passed your blog address on to a few people that really need to hear it. The essay is great - I'll post a link to it on my blog in the next couple of days.

You article was absolutely wonderful. It openly addressed so many things that truly NEED to be talked about. I agree with 'miz' - it should be reading material for every Bishop and Relief Society President.

I emailed the link to your article to a friend in my ward who is currently struggling, but has found little help after talking to her OBGYN. I encouraged her to seek another opinion, and to not be afraid to talk about it!

Thanks so much for sharing...

Laura, I just read your essay. WOW. I LOVED it. Thanks so much for sharing it. I'm really glad to be back in touch with you.

Having done some therapy time myself over the past couple of years (more for anxiety than depression), I have some questions about how you see Mormonism intersecting with mental health. Specifically, do you think there's something in the culture or our teachings that tends to create this high incidence of mental health problems (depression, anxiety, etc.) in Mormon women?
Or do you think we're pretty representative of the population as a whole?

I have my pet theories (but no scientific data) and would love to hear your point of view.

You are so brave for sharing so much and I hope you know how much it is appreciated by those of us who have not found the courage to talk about it yet. It's nice to read things I can relate to. Although there are some things I wish I couldn't relate to, (near shaken baby experience for one). I'm glad I found your blog.

Katie--those are good questions and I'm mulling them over for a future post (Tuesday ish . . .I have another one I'm working on for my other blog www.motleyvision.org that I'm aiming to get up by Monday!)

Oh, and if you want to put together your thoughts in a guest post I'd love it! Seriously! e-mail me at lolapalooza AT hotmail DOT com--I'm always looking for new perspectives and ideas.
